What is the Passport Seva Project?

Online Passport Services

The Passport Seva Project (PSP) is launched by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to make passport-related services accessible online, reducing the need for repeated office visits.

Secure & Trusted

New e-Passports include a biometric chip for enhanced security. Personal data like parents' names and addresses are no longer printed on the passport booklet.

How to Apply for a Passport

Follow these steps to apply for a fresh passport or re-issue online.

Register on Passport Seva Portal

Visit passportindia.gov.in, click Register, enter your email and create a password. Verify your email via OTP to complete sign-up.

Fill the Online Application Form

Log in and go to Services โ†’ Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport. Select passport office, type (Fresh/Re-issue), and booklet size (36 or 60 pages).

Enter Personal & Address Details

Fill your full name, date of birth, gender, marital status, family details, current address, and select the nearest police station for verification.

Submit & Pay Online

Review the complete application, agree to the declaration, and submit. Pay the applicable fee online (โ‚น1,500 for 36-page Normal or โ‚น3,500 for Tatkaal).

Book Appointment at Nearest PSK

After payment, schedule your appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or POPSK. Print your Application Receipt and carry it on the appointment day.

Visit PSK with Original Documents

Carry your appointment receipt, original documents, and photographs. Your biometrics and document verification will be completed at the PSK.

Police Verification & Delivery

Police verification (if required) is conducted. Once cleared, your passport is dispatched to your registered address by Speed Post.

Frequently Asked Questions
You need: (1) Proof of Identity โ€” Aadhaar card, PAN card, or Voter ID. (2) Proof of Address โ€” Aadhaar, utility bill, bank passbook, or rent agreement. (3) Proof of Date of Birth โ€” Birth certificate, Aadhaar, PAN card, or 10th marksheet. (4) 2 recent passport-size photographs (2ร—2 inch, white background). For children born after 1st October 2023, a Birth Certificate is now mandatory.
A Normal passport is processed in 30โ€“45 working days (subject to police verification). A Tatkaal (emergency) passport is processed in 1โ€“3 working days at an additional fee of โ‚น2,000 over the normal fee. Tatkaal requires extra supporting documents like a self-declaration (Annexure F).
For adults (18 and above), an Indian passport is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. For minors (under 18), the passport is valid for 5 years or until the minor turns 18, whichever is earlier. You can apply for renewal up to one year before expiry.

If you lose your passport, take these steps immediately: (1) Report the loss to the nearest Police Station and get an FIR copy. (2) Report to the nearest Passport Office or Indian Mission (if abroad). (3) Apply for a Re-issue passport on the Passport Seva portal. (4) Submit FIR copy, old passport details (if available), and required documents.
Yes. To change your name (after marriage or legally), apply for a Passport Re-issue and submit supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or Gazette notification. To change your address, apply for Re-issue and provide new address proof. For gender change, apply for Re-issue with relevant medical/legal documentation.
Police verification requirements vary. For fresh passports, it is usually required before or after issuance depending on your address and documents. For re-issue of passport without address change (and with valid old passport), prior police verification is generally not required. Tatkaal passports may be issued before police verification but are subject to post-issuance verification.
A POPSK is a Passport Seva Kendra set up inside a Post Office to extend passport services to smaller towns and rural areas. It offers the same services as a regular PSK. You can find and book appointments at your nearest POPSK through the official Passport Seva portal.
