Tatkaal Passport — Emergency Fast Track

Get your passport in 1–3 working days. Complete guide to eligibility, documents, fees and step-by-step application process.

Important: Tatkaal is an emergency service. The passport may be issued within 1–3 working days, but police verification happens post-issuance and can take additional time. A Tatkaal passport issued before police clearance will have an ECR (Emigration Check Required) endorsement until verification is done.

What is Tatkaal Passport Service?

Tatkaal (meaning "immediate" in Hindi) is an emergency passport service offered under the Passport Seva Project. It is designed for urgent situations where you need a passport quickly — for example, a sudden death in family abroad, emergency medical treatment, or urgent business travel. The fee is higher than a normal passport, but processing is significantly faster.

Who is Eligible for Tatkaal?

All Indian citizens who meet the general passport eligibility criteria can apply for Tatkaal. However, the following categories are NOT eligible:

  • Applicants with ECR (Emigration Check Required) status requiring emigration clearance
  • Applicants whose cases are pending in courts of law
  • Applicants who were previously denied a passport
  • Applicants who have been deported from a foreign country

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Tatkaal passport for international travel immediately?
Yes, a Tatkaal passport is a fully valid passport and can be used for international travel as soon as you receive it. However, if police verification is still pending, some countries may flag it during visa processing. Most countries accept it without issues — check with your destination country's embassy.
Who can sign Annexure F for Tatkaal?
Annexure F can be signed by: (1) A Gazetted Officer of the Government of India, (2) A State Government Gazetted Officer, (3) A First Class Judicial Magistrate or Executive Magistrate, (4) Municipal Councillor or Corporator, (5) MLA/MP. The officer must verify your identity and attest the form officially with stamp and signature.
What if I have a genuine emergency and no time for Tatkaal?
For genuine extreme emergencies (death of a close relative abroad, life-threatening medical emergency), you can contact your nearest Passport Office or Regional Passport Office directly. In some cases, the Passport Officer can issue an Emergency Certificate (EC) which is valid for a single journey to the destination country and back.
Can I convert my Normal application to Tatkaal after submission?
No. Once submitted, you cannot change the application scheme from Normal to Tatkaal. You would need to cancel or withdraw the existing application and submit a fresh Tatkaal application. Contact the Passport Seva helpline (1800-258-1800) for guidance on your specific situation.
